Bordeaux Red Bargain: 1997 E420 Sport

Recently listed near Simi Valley, California, this 1997 E420 Sport is a solid bargain for anyone looking for a V8 sedan. As a W210, this is a rare spec being a pre-facelift 420 with the sport package which was a $3,900 option back in 1997. The sport package comes with a full AMG body kit including front and rear bumpers, and side skirts. While the car does feature AMG monoblocks, they are 17" as opposed to the 18" we're used to seeing on the E55. For the United States market, the E55 was not offered until 1999 so this was the ultimate W210 of it's time.

The car is finished in Bordeaux Red which is among the more rare color offerings. Some minor scrapes can be seen along the bumpers and the headlights need a restoration, both of which are relatively simple fixes if so desired by the next owner. No clear coat issues or major blemishes are seen from the pictures. The woodgrain appears to be in excellent condition with no cracks or fading. We'd like to see pictures of the driver seat bolster for any excessive wear and also verify if the headliner is sagging.

Another huge plus for this car is the low mileage, showing just over 71k miles currently. The owner states the car has been owned in his family since new. Relatively recent maintenance includes newer brakes, tires, spark plugs, fuel/air filters, and fuel system cleaner. The seller also states the car just received a fresh oil and filter change which is done every 5k miles.

The M119 4.2L V8 was rated at 275 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque when new. While it still wasn't the fastest sedan on the road, it certainly had enough pep to make you smile on your daily commute. With an asking price of only $4,500 we have a very hard time arguing with the value proposition. This engine is still very young and we rarely see a pre-facelift sport with under 200k miles.
