We’ve been lucky enough to watch some of the rarest Mercedes trade hands in private and public settings. One of the cars we haven’t been able to watch is the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss. Only 75 of these cars were made and they rarely change hands in a public setting so seeing one pass through auction is a notable event in the community. This specific car was just listed through RM Sotheby’s and bidding will close on July 22nd. As we write this, bidding is up to 1.1MM USD and is expected to potentially double. If the rarity doesn’t get you excited, check out the design cues as a total nod to Mercedes Benz racing heritage and harkening to the late Sir Stirling Moss’s victory at the 1955 Mille Miglia, which is a record left unbroken to this day. The body has been even more streamlined and virtually all creature comforts have been stripped away. As a result the windscreen-less roadster presents itself as a timeless homage to the 300SLR 722.
These SLR McLaren Stirling Moss examples are expected to continue to increase in value over the years and are already on the way to being a legendary halo car for generations to come. Sadly, most will never see track time or GT time and are destined to collect wax and dust in garages and museums. If we had one, we’d wouldn’t be able to leave it parked.
